I love watching Carter draw. He is so much more advanced then Evan ever was at corresponding ages. Even at 2, Carter was drawing faces with every detail on them – I think this is due to the fact that he LOVES critiquing his Lightening McQueen Cars and his Thomas and Chuggington trains. Really anything that has a face on it, he observes and really takes note of all the details. It’s been fun watching him develop through the stages of understanding us through his drawings.
This week were the boys parent/teacher conferences. The conferences went great and they are where they should be. During Carter’s conference his teachers showed us his self portrait. They had each kid draw “what they think they look like.” And that was the only instruction.
This seals the deal that Carter is Jeremy’s kid. His teachers explained how he is advanced in the fact that he understands that we are made up of 3 sections with the arms and legs coming from the appropriate section. And that there are hands and feet attached.
Yesterday, during our unseasonably warm 68 degree and sunny weather, the boys were out playing with chalk. I suggested they draw pictures of themselves doing something with Mommy. They decided to draw each other. The conversation following was HILARIOUS! I wish I would have gotten a video or even a photo of the drawings. Evan insisted that Carter’s picture looked nothing like him and vice versa.
They were arguing their points and Carter explained to Evan that “his looked like Evan because it has eyes, ears, nose, mouth, eye brows and the hands and feet looked just like Evan’s”. The reason for his argument? Evan “drew” Carter with no face and no hands and feet. It was a typical circle with arms and legs coming from it and that totally frustrated Carter. I mean come on, doesn’t Evan understand the concept of details?
Eventually Evan puffed up his chest and stuck his nose in the air and explained, “this is the way I wanted to draw you Carter.” And walked away. So Carter took his chalk and drew in the missing details on Evan’s drawing which really made Evan mad. The pictures ended up big scribbly messes.
