Afternoon Rituals

Recently, Carter and I have started a new “after nap” ritual! He usually awakens before Evan does in the afternoon after naps. I look forward to this time, because it is quality time between just me and him. The first thing he does, he waits until the door opens and he hides from me. I ask where he is several times and then he appears! Grinning ear to ear behind his binky.

I am assuming that the thrill of walking has slightly worn off and now he doesn’t insist on squirming out of our arms every time we hold him. Actually the reverse is true, after nap time. I pick him up and he tucks his arms in and melts into my arms. I will walk over to the rocker and proceed to rock him for several minutes.

Then he perks up and insists on reading books. He will look up at his shelf above the rocker and squeal. That is his way of letting me know that he wants something. Right now, he insists on reading Moo, Baa, La La La. Not once, not twice but at least 4,239 times before looking up at his shelf and point to another book. It has gotten to the point that he will finish each line of that silly book! Too cute!

Then after reading Moo, Baa, La La, the Foot Book and Go, Dogs, Go, he will proceed to turn on this CD player. Which, as of right now, is still the CD of choice, the Go Fish Guys. We will sit on his super comfy rug and play or continue to read books until Evan wakes up!

I love this time with him! And think he enjoys it too – getting to be an “only child” for an half hour or so every afternoon!

What rituals do you enjoy with your kids?

  1. My family is full of early risers. Early in the morning the boys and I wake up and head straight for the sofa. We don’t turn on the TV, we just snuggle and talk about our dreams from the night before. It’s my favorite part of the day.

I normally pray with Naomi right before putting her down for bed. I sing a couple little songs to her then lay her down and pray, now when going to sleep for nap time, I will lay her down and she folds her hands, I say “do you want to pray” and she laughs, and we pray! It’s really cute! And her new word of Amen sounds like “Maaa Men” I love it!!

  4. Sophie and I snuggle on “mommy’s bed” every day before her naptime. She calls it “snuggles bed” and she’ll ask to do it when she’s really tired. We sing songs and cuddle before I read her books and put her to bed. It’s my favorite time of day!
