I decided to take the Wilton Cake Decorating Classes because of my obsession with my sons birthday cakes (click HERE, HERE and HERE if you would like to see what I have done so far). I thought it would be fun! It would be if a.) I had more time to spend practicing and b.) If I wasn’t such a perfectionist.
So for my first assignment, everything that could go wrong did, but some who know me would be proud, I just went with it and showed up to class with a “not-so-great” iced cake. More details about that in an upcoming post, along with pics from my first assignment.
But we did our first roses last night. I thought to myself, I can do this. I have always been great with small motor skills with my hands and hand-eye coordination. Well, needless to say, I was put in my place. Out of the 3 of us, mine were not the best, nor were they the second best, so for you smart ones out there, that left me, where? Yep, I admit it, at the bottom of my class {sniff, sniff, are you feeling sorry for me yet?}
So here is proof, because you know I always bring my camera for blogging opportunities. Yes, the other ladies were probably wondering why I was taking pics of this!! Only if they knew
!
My first, second and third attempt at a Wilton Rose. So I have to come to grips with not being perfect all the time. And let’s face it, when do I have time to practice with TWO toddlers running around? I guess I will be staying up late nights practicing. {Maybe}
But I could use some encouragement
. You can at least tell me they look great, even if you don’t mean it! And by the way, the petals on the pink one-suppose to be smooth-oops!
I have to say, I actually like the rough edges on the pink one. It appeals to my eye.
My mom took the Wilton course in her early 20’s. It has been one of the best investments she has ever made. The Wilton rose is one of the hardest I have found, but yours look beautiful! I am really impressed. My mom is a nurse, but has made wedding cakes (including mine!) and countless birthday, shower and whatever cakes. I now know how to decorate cakes (from watching her my entire life!) and she and I always team up to make Noah and Collin’s birthday cakes. It is so fun and my boys TOTALLY love being able to design their own cake! Way to go! Keep up the great work.
I think the roses are beautiful! I NEVER would have known they weren’t perfect if you hadn’t told me! You and your perfectionism crack me up. I can’t wait to see pics from your other cake-making adventures. You know Sophie’s birthday is in like 4 weeks – you can “practice” on her if you want. Ha!
just waiting to be asked : ). You know I would love to do hers. Just give me a theme to think about!
I think they look GREAT! Seriously, flowers in nature aren’t perfect so flowers on a cake shouldn’t be either
I just took a cooking class and loved it so I’ve been contemplating taking a baking or decorating class too. Seems like so much fun!
well, i actually really like the pink flower too. but, i am not a perfectionist at all. i would prefer the pretty pink one to a “perfect” rose any day of the week. that’s just me.
Hey Cortney, how many times have I told you, “in all labor there is profit.” Those starter cakes were near perfect, having been created by “eyeball.” I should know, I`m the one tought you the skill. The roses are a thing of beauty
(a joy forever) And while I`m on a roll, let me tell everyone who may read this, that my daughter builds the second best apple pie in the world. About three inches thick, with a crust so light it just floats up off the plate. On the down side, I only get one a year. Dad
i told bob you were taking cake making classes, and i kid u not he said “she doesnt have to do that- she is already really good at it” : )
I also think they are great! My mom and little sis started taking them awhile back! They made Naomi’s 1st birthday cake, and it was simple and I loved it! I also want to take one!!
